Volunteer Firefighters Wanted

Crystal Fire Department provides it services to the extent that Crystal's volunteers are able to do so in a safe, responsible manner.
To become a firefighter "member"
of the department:
- No experience needed.
-
Crystal Fire Department recognizes that most
members of the department have families and paying jobs that will have priority over the department. However, members must
be willing to commit time for training (see below) and to make calls when available.
-
Required training and required personal protective
equipment are provided at no cost.
-
Crystal Fire Department has in-house training
four times each month. Firefighters are required to attend at least one training session each month. Training
is currently held on the first two Saturday's of the month from 8AM-10AM and the third and fourth Monday's from 7PM-9PM.
-
Three classes are required to become a certified
firefighter. These classes are Introduction to Firefighting (16 hours), Personal Protective Equipment (16 hours) and
Woodland Fires (8 hours). Only certified firefighters are allowed within the "fall zone" of a burning structure.
Crystal Fire Department requires that the three courses be completed within one year of joining the department. The
classes are generally offered in the evenings and on weekends throughout the year. The state requires 24 hours per year
of fire academy certified training. Many of Crystal Fire Department's normally scheduled classes meet the certification
criteria.
- Firefighters are given a one-way pager/radio that is activated when the county receives
a 9-1-1
medical or fire call from within Crystal's district or when mutual aid is requested by a neighboring department. The
firefighter will be advised of the type of incident, the location and other relevant information.
-
Firefighters are not staffed at the station.
The only time firefighters are "on call" are for one week out of four for nightime medical calls from
10 PM to 6 AM.
- Crystal Fire Department averages 150 calls per year. The majority are medical
calls.
- The Arkansas Fire Academy offers a number of various classes including hands-on structure
attack classes, pump operations, and emergency vehicle driving. These optional classes are free, offered at various
locations throughout the state, and are available to certified firefighters.
-
Pulaski County provides medical insurance, at
no expense, to cover firefighters injured while training or while at an incident.
For persons willing to commit to regular training but who do not
wish to be a firefighter, auxiliary personnel are needed to drive trucks and provide assistance at the emergency
scene. Volunteers are also needed who would be willing to make monthly commitments to clean Station 1 or to keep
up the grounds around Stations 1 & 2 (this is currently being done by the firefighters).
